Southern California is shaping up for some excellent summer fishing, and the action out of Dana Point continues to improve. With warm water pushing in and clean conditions offshore, anglers have plenty of opportunities whether you’re fishing locally, the islands, or offshore.

Yellowtail
Yellowtail remain the headline species this week. Schools are showing on local kelp paddies and around the islands, with fish ranging from 10 to over 25 pounds. Live sardines have been getting the majority of the bites, while surface irons and Colt Snipers have been producing quality fish when they’re up feeding. The best action has been during the morning hours before the afternoon boat traffic. (Western Outdoor News)

White Seabass
White seabass continue to reward anglers putting in the time around squid grounds and hard structure. The early morning bite has been the most productive, with several quality fish being landed this week. Live squid remains the top bait when available, but fresh dead squid has also been getting bit. Bluefin Tuna
Bluefin are still within overnight range and continue to provide opportunities for anglers chasing trophy fish. Most of the action has been on sinker rigs, knife jigs, and fly-lined sardines, with fish ranging from 30 pounds into the triple digits. Finding fish has not been the problem—getting them to bite has required patience and the right presentation. (Western Outdoor News)

Local Fishing
Local bass fishing has been outstanding, with calico bass, sand bass, bonito, and an occasional halibut keeping rods bent. The local kelp lines are full of life and are producing steady action for both experienced anglers and families looking for a fun day on the water. (Sportfishing Report)

Captain’s Outlook
Conditions look excellent heading into the weekend. If the water temperatures remain stable, we expect the yellowtail bite to stay strong while bluefin continue to move within range. Every trip has the potential to produce quality fish, and now is one of the best times of the year to get on the water.
